The Jayrambati of the South
Ramakrishna Math, Konampatti
The History of this Ashrama
“Meditating on God in solitude the mind acquires knowledge, dispassion, and devotion." – Bhagavan Sri Ramakrishna
"If you practice spiritual discipline for some time in a solitary place you will find that your mind
has become strong, and then you can live in any place or society without being in the least
affected by it." - Sri Sarada Devi
Inspired by the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna and Sri Sarada Devi, a group of devotees in and around the Sivakasi region embarked on a dedicated spiritual journey, gathering in their homes starting in 1986. Recognizing the necessity for a worship place, they established the Holy Trio temple and founded the Sri Ramakrishna Sarada Trust in Konampatti, serving both households’s (Grihastha ashrama) and the hermitage’s (Vanaprastha ashrama) seekers of God. The ashrama quickly expanded to encompass 14 acres, playing a vital role in promoting the teachings of the Holy Trio through spiritual publications, a monthly magazine, various spiritual, educational, and cultural events, and charitable activities. Their profound dedication transformed this previously barren land into a spiritual sanctuary, nurturing both monastics and lay devotees.
Under the guidance of Swami Tanmayanandaji, who was then the Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya, Coimbatore, the Ashram was formally registered under a trust named Sri Ramakrishna Sarada Trust, Konampatti, on 11 December 1995. Since then, the office bearers of the trust have managed the administration and activities of the Ashram. The Ashram works under the affiliation of Tamil Nadu Ramakrishna Vivekananda Bhava Prachar Parishad, which runs under the guidelines set by Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math.
As one enters the Ashram, which spans around fourteen acres, one finds a modest prayer hall with an edifice typical of the temple gopurams in Tamil Nadu. The devotees perform regular and special rituals on appropriate occasions in the temple. As one explores the campus, one comes across two distinct huts, uncommon in Tamil Nadu but typical in West Bengal. The architecture of the huts illustrates one of the distinct traits of the devotees of Konampatti: their unshakable and boundless devotion to Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi. The huts, built in Chala style, are modelled on the holy mother's residence in Jayrambati. The huts, which came to be known as 'Jayrambati of the South', were consecrated by Srimat Swami Smarananandaji Maharaj, the then Vice-President of the Order, on 30 December 2008. The campus also has a sacred Panchavati, a meditation spot inspired by the Panchavati at Dakshineswar, where Sri Ramakrishna performed intense austerities.
At first glance, the devotees of Konampatti may seem like devotees of any other place, but we are mistaken. Leaving the comforts of town, they have toiled for 3 decades to create this superb spiritually throbbing sanctuary– Tapo Bhoomi. Another distinct feature that defines them is their thirst for knowledge.
The followers of the Ashram hold Satsangha every day, adhering to the teachings of Sri Ramakrishna. The tightly bonded devotees are recognized for providing a substantial number of monastic members to Sri Sarada Math, Ramakrishna Math, and the Ramakrishna Mission. Additionally, on the land situated in front of the Ashram, the devotees established a community consisting of fifty plots. Approximately twenty elderly women devotees constructed residences primarily for their spiritual pursuits. Furthermore, around twenty-five lay devotees also built their homes on these plots.
The Ashram's office bearers have long proposed to the headquarters of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission that they incorporate the centre into their fold. The headquarters accepted the proposal. On 6 April 2025, the headquarters took over the centre in an official ceremony held at Konampatti Ashram premises. The program began on 5 April 2025 with the hoisting of the Mission's flag and the opening of the stone inscription containing the Ashram's history by Swami Devarajanandaji, the convener of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Bhava Prachar Parishad, Belur Math. Swami Muktidanandaji, a trustee of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, formally inaugurated a bookstall and an open library. Srimat Swami Gautamanandaji Maharaj, the president of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, delivered a benedictory address via a recorded audio. The monks of the organisation delivered several addresses during this program. Also, cultural programs were held during this occasion.
On the following day, the monks of the Order performed traditional rituals— arati, puja and homa. Swami Muktidanandaji delivered the chief address on this occasion. The Ashram was then officially handed over to Belur Math. Around thirty-six Swamis from different centres across India took part in this occasion. This milestone reinforced its spiritual foundation and realised its objective of serving devotees through the newly established Ramakrishna Math here.
